Calvin Royal III began his formal training at the Pinellas County Center for the Arts at Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg, Florida. He was a finalist at the Youth America Grand Prix in NYC in April 2006 and received the Ethan Stiefel Scholarship to attend the JKO School at American Ballet Theatre in September of that year. Royal joined ABT’s main Company in April 2011. Since joining Royal has been featured in many of the company’s classical and contemporary ballets, most notably in works by Mark Morris, Twyla Tharp, Christopher Wheeldon, Alexei Ratmansky, and Jessica Lang. In January 2014, Royal was nominated for the Clive Barnes Award, and named one of Dance Magazine’s “Top 25 to Watch“. In addition, Royal has appeared in numerous works at the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Nantucket Antheneum Dance Festival, and Vail International Dance Festival. Royal was the winner of a grant from the Leonore Annenberg Fellowship Fund, and most recently landed two consecutive campaigns with GAP a part of their dance inspired fitness line GapFit.
